Doctors were of no interest to me for the first 32 years of my life until one day I became very ill! The doctor called and examined me then said, “You’ve got jaundice.” I can still remember the relief I felt just knowing that he knew what was wrong and what to do about it.
Jesus said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” [ Mark 2:17 ]. Sadly, most people think they are morally healthy enough to be fit for heaven without any help from Jesus, but they are seriously mistaken.
As a young man I thought that my rights would cancel out my wrongs so that I would be good enough to go to heaven. But then I read these words of Jesus, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” [ Matthew 22:37-38 ]. Suddenly I realised that because I did not love God with all my heart, I was breaking the greatest commandment and therefore guilty of committing the greatest sin!
From childhood I believed that the Lord Jesus Christ had come to earth to die for bad people but in my pride I never thought that I needed this Great Physician. With tears in my eyes I asked Him to forgive me and I found great comfort in these words from Psalm 51 verse 7, “A broken and a contrite heart O God, you will not despise.” Jesus the Great Physician specialises in healing broken hearts. So why not come to Him today? He says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn of Me for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Talk to Him about it now. [ Luke 4:18 & Matthew 11:28-30 ]
