I am so grateful to the Lord, who has spared and inspired me for the past 20 years to write 1000 ‘Thoughts’, first in Liverpool in November 1984, then throughout the UK. The potential readership is now about 2½ million and our website www.thoughtfortheweek.co.uk established a year ago, is also having many visitors.
Newspaper editors say that ‘Thought for the Week’ is their most popular feature. These little columns are cut out and posted around the world to family and friends. They are copied by magazine editors, quoted by preachers but hated by atheists! Although happily some of these express their appreciation.
Recently a reader complained that I used my column to evangelise! With this I gladly agreed because, ‘to evangelise’ means ‘to spread good news’ which all would agree is in very short supply these days. ‘Thought for the Week’ proclaims the most wonderful news in the world. It tells of a loving God who gave His only Son to die on the cross and thus pay the penalty our sins deserved. But even more wonderful than this! On the third day Jesus Christ conquered the tomb and rose from the dead! This is without any doubt the best thing that has ever happened in the history of the world! To all who turn from their sins and trust Him as their Saviour, He offers not only pardon, but also power to live the most joyful, useful and satisfying life on earth. Then, wonder of wonders, to receive an immortal body that will be able to enjoy the eternal delights of heaven.
People say, “Your articles make me think” but my prayer is that they will also make people act. If everyone in Britain acted upon the Bible teaching in these ‘Thoughts’ the whole nation would rejoice! Crime, drunkenness, anti-social behaviour, swearing and impurity would vanish. This is what happened 100 years ago in November 1904 during the Welsh Revival. It can happen again today.
