TREASURE ABOVE

A widow continued living in the same house long after her husband died. She didn't want to leave her home but gradually everything got on top of her as the house needed extensive repairs and she only had a small pension. She did have a son but he lived a long way away and was struggling to pay a mortgage and support his family.

One morning the milkman found her full milk-bottle still on the step. The police were called and the body of the old lady was found slumped beside her chair. The son disposed of her possessions, which weren't worth much. But then he remembered his parents talking about junk in the attic which had been left by the previous occupiers some fifty years before. He got it down but as his family sorted through the bric-a-brac they discovered some very special looking china. They put it up for auction and were dumbfounded when it when it realised £10,000!

How tragic that the dear old soul had lived in poverty when all the time she had treasure up above! But sadly millions have treasures on earth but no treasures up above in heaven. Indeed they sometimes think that the very idea is a load of rubbish and that those who believe such things are wrong in their attic!

The Bible says, "We brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out." [ 1 Timothy 6:7 ] This is why Jesus said, "Do not lay up treasures on earth - but lay up treasures in heaven." [ Matthew 6:19,20 ] We cannot begin to do this until we turn from our sins and ask Jesus for pardon. He will then give us the power to lay up treasures in heaven by living a life that pleases God. [ Proverbs 10:22 ]
