People in Wrexham, North Wales are being invited to ask questions about Christian belief. This week’s question is, “Can you believe the stories of Genesis?”
In the light of modern research, the answer is an emphatic “Yes!” So let’s look at 3 major historical events recorded in Genesis.
1. The Creation of the World. As Apollo 8 circled the moon in 1968, the astronauts felt that only the following majestic language of Genesis chapter one could adequately express their feelings. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” With the big bang theory now being seriously doubted, this opening sentence speaks with authority and accuracy. In just 10 words it brilliantly states the five essentials of creation. “In the beginning” = Time. “God” = Intelligent information. “Created” = energy. “The heavens” = space. “And the earth” = matter. These facts will always transcend human theories.
2. Noah’s Flood. The archaeological evidence for a global flood is confirmed by flood stories from around the world. If it were only a local flood no boat would be needed. Certainly not the Ark, which was half the length of the Titanic! Genesis plainly states that the flood was a judgement from God upon a wicked and violent world. In recent years many have laughed at the very idea of such a judgement, but 2000 years ago Peter foretold that scoffers would indeed arise who would deny the flood! [ 2 Peter 3:3-7 ] Jesus, who never lied, forecast that the days before His second coming would be like the lawless days before the flood. [ Matthew 24:37-39 ] His words are surely coming true!
3. The Tower of Babel. It used to be taught that languages evolved from grunts to grammar! But the evidence now shows that our present languages sprang from one complex one. Exactly as Genesis said! [ Genesis 11 ]
