Spitting and respect are two great opposites in Britain today. 40 years ago football referees never saw any spitting. Doctors tell us that saliva is a mild antiseptic that’s meant to stay in the mouth to keep it clean but saliva can still harbour infection so it’s serious to spit into someone’s face. Even Bible scrolls from about 1500BC recognise the dangers of spitting. [See Leviticus 15:8]
Before crucifying Jesus they spit in His face. [Matthew 26:67] Today many do this by using His name as a swear word. Terrible will be their judgment unless they repent and believe. Respect for God and His laws brings respect for people and property and curbs anti-social behavior.
