THE IMPORTANCE OF GRASS

Grass is the most important plant on earth. At creation, as soon as the dry land appeared God said, "Let the earth bring forth grass." [ Genesis 1:11 ].

There are over 3000 types of grass with hundreds of uses. Our word 'paper' comes from 'papyrus' a form of grass. Grass provides straw for thatching roofs and hay for feeding cattle during winter months. Millions of animals depend upon green pastures and are designed with teeth that will cut off the precious blades without pulling up the roots.

The prophet Isaiah wrote, "All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever." [ Isaiah 40:6-8 ]. It is indeed literally true that all flesh is grass. When we eat bread we eat wheat which is grass! There is no constituent in the human body that cannot be found in grass.

Like grass we all fade and fall. The brilliant brain, the beautiful body, the nimble fingers become dust. The inspired brush and pen lie lifeless. The melodious voice falls silent, passions evaporate and all earthly treasures are left behind.

This is certainly bad news but the good news is that God's word never fades, it "stands forever". The Hebrew word conveys the idea of the gospel getting up and going! There is a dynamic force in the seed of God's word that can impart eternal life.

Just as the sun transmutes dark soil into fields of golden grain so the word of God assures us that the Son of God has conquered sin and death on our behalf. When we believe this 'Word', repent of our sins and receive it humbly into the seed bed of our hearts and repent of our sins, then the Saviour kisses us with the golden touch of His eternal glory and promises us painless immortality!
