THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS

Over a century ago this text hung on the wall of a boy’s bedroom, “Thou God seest me.” [Genesis 16:13] One night the boy’s father forced him to help him burgle a house. When they arrived it was agreed that the son should look both ways then give a secret signal if anyone appeared. The father began climbing a downspout but suddenly the boy gave the secret sign. The father rushed back and the boy said, “I looked both ways but then I looked up and remembered my bedroom text, ‘Thou God seest me.’ Remember, God said, ‘Thou shalt not steal.’ [Exodus 20] Please don’t do it Dad because God can see you and you’ll be punished.” Happily the man repented and never burgled again.
