EASTER SUNDAY

The late Harry Houdini, the famous escapologist, was locked in strong boxes, prison cells and underwater containers but he always escaped. But like each of us Harry could not escape death! The Bible says, “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement.” [ Hebrews 9:27 ]

Only one person has conquered the grave and that is the Lord Jesus Christ, who said that He would! On Easter Sunday millions will be celebrating what is without any doubt the best news and most remarkable event in world history!

After His crucifixion the body of Jesus was placed in a tomb that had only just been hewn out of solid rock. A very large stone was rolled against the entrance to the tomb and this was sealed with Pontius Pilate’s seal who was Roman governor at the time and one of his coins can be seen today in the British Museum. Three days later an angel rolled back this enormous stone! The Roman guards shook with fear and became like dead men. Soon some women found the tomb empty and observed that the grave cloths were lying undisturbed where the body of Jesus had lain.

If only the authorities could have found the corpse they could have nipped Christianity in the bud! Instead they had to bribe the soldiers to tell a ludicrous lie about the disciples stealing the body whilst they were asleep on duty! This failure of the enemies of Jesus to produce His body is conclusive evidence that He had indeed risen from the dead!

After His resurrection, Jesus was seen at least 10 times and once by over 500. He could also eat food and be handled. The once dispirited disciples were soon transformed by His resurrection power and ready to die for Christ! At Easter read the closing chapter of each of the four gospels and 1 Corinthians chapter 15.
