FLOUR POWER

The Bible relates this fascinating episode in the history of Elisha the prophet who lived about 900BC.  One day he was teaching his students theology during a time of famine.  Suddenly he realised they were too hungry to concentrate so he told a servant to put on the large pot and boil stew for the students!  Trying to be helpful, one student gathered some fruit from a wild vine and shredded it into the pot without realising it was poisonous.  “Serve it up,” said Elisha and the students plunged in their spoons.  But then their faces twisted and strange noises came from their lips.  “Man of God, they cried, there is death in the pot!”  and they daren’t eat it.  Quickly Elisha said, “Bring some flour, put it in the pot and serve it out.”   Immediately there was nothing harmful in the pot and the students ate it up. [ 2 Kings 4:38-41 ]

So what’s the message for us?  Jesus told us to look for teaching about Himself in the Old Testament so let’s first examine the flour.  Jesus once likened Himself to a corn of wheat that would fall into the ground and die but bring forth a great harvest.  [ John 12:24 ]  The word wheat means white so the white flour represents the purity and sinlessness of the Lord Jesus.

The death pot represents the human heart that Jesus said is, “Full of evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness and blasphemies.”  [ Matthew 15:19 ]

Politicians can only make laws and change things but all the trouble in the world flows from the human heart and only the pure flour power of the Lord Jesus can overcome this death pot of evil.  The high moral standards Britain once had came through the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  It’s still our only hope today.
