The Pharisees were a strict religious sect who were hated by nearly everyone including the Lord Jesus, whose rebukes are recorded in Matthew chapter 23. He begins by reminding the people that they should observe and obey all the good teaching of their founder Moses but the Pharisees do not do this for they bind heavy burdens on men’s shoulders but will not move them with one of their fingers! They also dress up in luxurious robes and love the best places at feasts and the synagogues and to receive greetings in the market place.
The rebukes of Jesus include eight woes which we should adapt to suit our modern times and so avoid the condemnation of God but obey the words of Jesus.
