HARVEST THANKSGIVING
It was Jane’s first day at university and she was rather nervous but she had asked God to guide her to a good friend. She sat down in the canteen for her first meal and instinctively bowed her head and offered up a short prayer of thanks for her food. When she opened her eyes a girl was standing beside her table. “I’m Margaret,” she said, “I’ve been praying that I’d meet a Christian friend!” At this Harvest time many will be singing:
All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above,
Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all His love.
All food comes from seeds and these come from God. When I plant my tomato seeds I never cease to be amazed at these tiny computerised machines. Give them water and warmth and they spring into life! Hi-tech roots compatible with the structure and chemistry of the soil begin their complex tasks. They are the hope and anchor of the future plant. Soon a stem stretches upwards designed to increase in strength according to its need to overcome the pull of gravity. From the stem grow leaves which are solar panels that will convert sunlight into food. Then the delicate flowers open and pollinate, and wonder of wonders the first tiny tomatoes appear. Soon truss stems thicken to take the weight of the fruit and we pick the first, ‘love apples’ as they used to be called. But what do we find when we slice them in half? More seeds! The dear little computer machine had been lovingly programmed to make itself and so provide fruit for future generations!
If you say that all these complicated processes happen by chance in millions of plants you must be joking! The Bible says, “God did not leave Himself without witness. He gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.” [ Acts 14:17 ] Let us worship Him, with, ‘Humble, thankful hearts’.
