THE DARK SIDE OF FUN

Fun has two sides to it.  There is harmless fun, which helps us to relax and does us good but as the dictionary shows the word fun also has a dark side because it’s connected with making a fool of someone or tricking them.  This is clearly seen at Halloween when hideously disguised children have fun knocking at doors and asking the devilishly clever question, ‘Trick or Treat?’ which has terrified many people living on their own.

There was a time when Halloween was harmless fun but now things have got beyond a joke.  Since 1999 Halloween sales have doubled with millions being squandered on vampire masks, ghost and skeleton outfits, devil’s horns, cauldrons, scythes and life size rats!

So why this obsession with the evil and the unpleasant?  The reason is that there is something inside each of us that is fascinated by evil.  Because as a nation we have largely turned away from God the devil has been able to turn the tables on us and make things we once considered evil and diabolical, appear delightful and just harmless fun!

The Celtic calendar called the end of October ‘The night of all witches’ but the church transformed this into ‘The night of all saints’ which is what Halloween means.  In an attempt to restore the sacredness of October 31st many churches now have a Hallelujah evening.  Hallelujah means Praise the Lord.  Britain has been greatly blessed in the past by multitudes using our great hymns to praise God for our Lord Jesus Christ.  He defeated the Devil by dying and rising again and now by His Holy Spirit He can purify our hearts so that we hate all that is evil and love all that is good.  “Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord.” [ Psalm 33:12 ]
