The debt culture

The word ‘culture’ used to mean, ‘improvement by education and training’ but sadly we now have the Drink Culture, the Drug Culture and more recently, the Debt Culture. There is some truth in the saying, “The Devil has all the D’s!” Certainly these cultures are Degrading and now the arrival of the Debt culture is also bringing Depression to many.

One of the causes of debt is the false belief, encouraged by unscrupulous money lenders and shop traders, that a quick and easy purchase of what you desire will automatically guarantee happiness. The Bible says, “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another.” [ Romans 13:8 ] This doesn’t mean sexual love but God’s love that makes us want to be kind to everyone. The Bible doesn’t say it’s wrong to be in debt but it does say, “The wicked borrows and does not repay.” [ Psalm 37 v 21 ] A debt should burn a hole in our pockets until it’s paid. Many a small business has collapsed because bills have not been paid in time. If we’re sincere we will obey the command, “Thou shalt not steal.” [ Exodus 20:15 ] then we won’t rob our neighbours by borrowing and not repaying. If we’ve borrowed more than we should, perhaps from a building society, we must make every effort to pay back what we owe on a regular basis.

Finally, God invoices us, this means, “calls upon us”, to pay Him perfect obedience. This of course is impossible so we are all debtors to Him! However the good news is that Jesus Christ has paid our debt with His own blood. We can never repay such love but we can express our gratitude by our words and deeds and by giving instead of getting. This will lift Depression and bring Delight!
