Who do you trust most?

In 1859 when Blondin the great tight rope walker announced that he would cross the gorge of the Niagara River, he started the trip that was to make history. With intentional hesitations and swayings he had the huge crowd of spectators gripped in suspense for 18 minutes. Then suddenly women fainted and men shouted as he performed a backward somersault near the shore!

Amongst all his many stunts Blondin pushed a wheelbarrow across the gorge. He would ask the crowd, "Do you believe I could push you across?" "Yes!" they cried. "Well then, who'll be the first to get into the barrow?" There was silence! Everyone believed, but no-one trusted Blondin enough to get in.

In this materialistic age we must never forget that without the invisible quality we call trust, life would be chaotic. It's wonderful to know people we can trust completely but even through circumstances beyond their control they may let us down. This is why the Bible says, "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man." [ Psalm 118:8 ] The Bible also says, "O taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the man who trusts in Him." [ Psalm 34:8 ] We will never taste our food unless we trust that it is fit to put into our mouths and we will never taste and enjoy the goodness of God unless we trust Him enough to receive Him as the Bread of Life for our souls. St. Paul explains how we do this as follows, "If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." [ Romans 10:9 ]

Nearly 60 years ago I obeyed these words, turned from my sins, trusted Christ for pardon and have been tasting His goodness ever since.
