With the threat of a water shortage we should not grieve God by grumbling about the rain! Our earth is unique in the universe with water covering 70% of its surface. This is just as well because the human body consists of about 60% water! Any schoolboy knows that water consists of two atoms of hydrogen plus one of oxygen, yet scientists agree that water is so complex that they cannot plumb the depths of a single drop!
The precise surface tension of water borders on the miraculous and its ability to dissolve almost anything makes life possible. Its melting and boiling points are unusual compared with other liquids and the fact that ice conveniently floats on water is amazing. Scientists have various ideas about why water has such qualities but they cannot explain how! Such brilliant design features could never have arisen accidentally from mindless molecules! They must have their origin in a source of super intelligence and power.
The 3 atoms in water remind us of the Holy Trinity. I mentioned this to a scientist who was researching into water. “Yes”, he replied, “It’s true that 3 atoms make one molecule of water and that the Godhead consists of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, but there is a mystery about both that should make us wonder and worship!”
Jesus spoke these words to a woman who was drawing water from a well. “Whoever drinks the water I shall give him will never thirst. But the water I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” [ John 4:14 ]
This means that water is God’s gift to quench our physical thirst but only the fountain of His Holy Spirit in our hearts can bring eternal life and love to our souls.
