THE POWER OF PRAYER

This is the true story of a poor man who wanted to show in the most explicit way that God was alive and that He listens to the prayers of His children and helps those who trust in Him.

The man was George Müller, born 200 years ago in 1805 who founded an orphanage in Bristol. This eventually fed, clothed, housed and educated 2000 boys and girls. No appeals for money were ever made but all their needs were met in answer to prayer. The five magnificent orphan houses can still be seen on Ashley Down Road. They cost over 100,000 and all together 1½ million was received in answer to prayer. The equivalent of over 75,000,000 today! His work still continues through the George Müller Foundation telephone 0117 9245001.

Incredibly up to the age of 20 Müller was a thief, liar, gambler, drunkard and jail-bird! However a friend invited him to a prayer meeting where he was greeted with the words, “Come as often as you please, our house and heart are open to you!” His heart was touched and as he knelt to pray he suddenly found what he was looking for, that, “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” [ 1 Timothy 1:15 ] There and then he yielded to Christ and was saved from a wicked and wasted life.

When Müller died aged 92 the whole of Bristol went into mourning. At the funeral many of the 10,000 orphans were there to pay tribute, some from 50 years ago. The Liverpool Mercury reported that, “Mr Müller told the world that his orphanage was the result of prayer. Rationalism will sneer at this but it would be unscientific to belittle historical occurrences. Much juggling would be needed to make the orphanages on Ashley Down vanish from view!”
