Jeremy Paxman the famous axe-man interviewer on the BBC Newsnight Programme often makes the most experienced experts tremble by his penetrating questions! It was therefore fascinating to see the very human side of his nature when tears filled his eyes during a documentary featuring a search for his family tree. At one point when he opened an ancestor’s Bible, the camera zoomed in on this verse she had underlined. “The secret of the LORD is with them that fear Him.” [ Psalm 25:14 ] To fear God means to reverence Him. A naturalist investigating the secrets of wildlife will never discover anything if he dashes into a wood waving a camera! He must approach with great reverence, only then will God reveal the secrets of His creation.

It’s an honour when a close friend shares a secret with us and the more noble the friend, the greater the honour. So what a great honour it is when Almighty God reveals His secrets to human beings! It’s obvious that the lady who underlined the text revered the Bible as the word of God. By the guiding light of this precious book she walked with God and like a friend He daily revealed wonderful secrets to her.

Many years ago a husband and wife were reading the Bible by their fireside when the man said, “Wife, if this book is right, we are wrong!” As they read further he said, “Wife, if this book is right, we are lost!” Soon they were reading about the death and resurrection of Jesus when suddenly God revealed to them the secret of forgiveness and the husband cried out, “Wife, if this book is right, we can be saved!” Together they knelt in prayer and trusted Jesus as their Saviour. Soon they were discovering more secrets of His love and kindness.
