When disturbing cracks appeared on the 42nd floor of a skyscraper the manager arranged for a team of surveyors to call. Later he was annoyed to find them in the basement. “Sir,” said the chief surveyor, “You may have cracks on the 42nd floor but your problem is down here in the basement!”
The foundations of any building or nation are very important and today cracks are appearing throughout society in Britain. We have the curse of the drugs, drink and debt cultures, increasing crime and anti-social behaviour, the break-down of family life and stress related illnesses, all of which are making Britain less happy that it was 50 years ago.
Instead of Parliament passing innumerable laws that can only paper over the cracks it would be far cheaper and more effective if they got down to the task of restoring the old tried and tested moral foundations based on the Bible. It’s about time the good old 10 Commandments were laid down again as the original basis of our Britishness! They should be taught in schools, distributed to every householder, and displayed on advertising sites and prime time TV! Most of these commands would also be accepted by other religions.
Happily God has written His moral code upon our hearts so that our conscience stands like a policeman who waves us on if we’re right or orders us to stop if we’re wrong. How often has ‘Constable Conscience’ helped the police by compelling a crook to give himself up?! By teaching the 10 Commandments we will be making the task of Constable Conscience much easier but most of all we will be honouring God who promises that, “Those who honour Me I will honour, but those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.” [See Exodus ch 20, Romans 2:15 and 1 Samuel 2:30]
