“Arrivals” and “Departures” are important signs on a train station. Similarly along the journey of life there will be the joyful arrival of babies but the sad departure of loved ones. Although we know our date of birth we do not know our date of death! To be always thinking about our death is morbidity but to never think about it is stupidity. Many years ago a consignment of goats was put on a train with the delivery address tied around their necks. Sadly they all ate each others labels so that no one knew their destination!
Many are like silly goats travelling to an unknown destination, as the following tale illustrates.
A jester was a great favourite at the king’s court. His fooling got everyone laughing. One day the king handed the jester a golden sceptre and told him to travel the world and give it to anybody who was a greater fool than himself. The jester travelled far and wide but he could find nobody who was a greater fool than himself. One day the jester received a message from the palace commanding him to return quickly because the king was ill.
Soon the jester was beside the bed of the dying monarch who said, “I am going on a long journey from which I shall never return.” “Have you prepared for that journey?” asked the jester. “No!” replied the king. “Then,” said the jester, “You are a greater fool than I!” And he handed him back the sceptre!
To be certain that heaven is our destination and that we can lay up treasure there, fills hearts and minds with peace and hope. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No-one comes to the Father except through Me.” [ John 14:6 ] He died to save you. Trust Him now.
