Whilst serving with the RAF in 1945 we stayed one night in the Heliopolis Palace Hotel in Cairo. Our meals were served in a splendid dining hall but I shall never forget the head waiter who stood on a platform in the centre. He never said a word but he guided the waiters to the right table by just looking at them!
Early in February 1946 I knelt by my bed in an old Indian army stable and surrendered my life to Christ. As a friend pointed out to me later, “You were born again in a stable!” Soon after this I was reading Psalm 32 in the Bible when I was struck by these words from God, “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go, I will guide thee with mine eye.” Immediately I remembered the head waiter and so now for 60 years I have prayed that God will guide me with His eye and I can truthfully say that He has.
We only have one life to live so it’s vital that we quickly find God’s plan for our lives then use our gifts in a way we know would please the Giver who is God. If someone gave us a gift, perhaps a very expensive coat, and the next day they found us wearing it whilst painting the garden shed they would be offended. How much more serious it is to offend God.
To help us follow the happy plan God has for our lives the Bible says, “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts.” [ Colossians 3:15 ] This means that if we make careless decisions God will not give us peace of heart. But if we pray for guidance before making decisions He will cause His wonderful peace to rule in our hearts.
