HUMPHRYS IN SEARCH OF GOD

‘Humphrys in search of God’ was a recent BBC radio programme. John Humphrys received a good church upbringing that led him to a simple belief in God. Later, however, as a young journalist, his faith in a loving and merciful God was shattered through his continual exposure to human tragedy. This was particularly true 40 years ago when he was actually present at the Aberfan disaster. This was when part of a colliery tip engulfed a school, killing 116 children and 28 adults.

In his interview with the Archbishop of Canterbury, it became very apparent that John longed to reclaim his lost faith so much, that he had been on his knees praying, but, “Nothing happened!” Like many others John was hoping for some special feelings to give him faith, but this was putting the cart before the horse! The Bible clearly states that, “Faith comes by hearing the Word of God.” [ Romans 10:17 ] It is by prayerfully, reverently and thoughtfully reading the Bible, that true faith is born. There can be no genuine experience of God’s love, joy and peace unless a person first confesses and forsakes their sins, then trusts in Christ’s sacrificial death to be sufficient to pay the penalty their sins deserved. Such confessions to God will bring you holy and happy desires to please your heavenly Father.

I am aged 80 but my wife and I can say, “Goodness and mercy have followed us all our days.” [ Psalm 23 ] Through many trials we have never doubted God’s wisdom even when Margaret, our 2 year old daughter, fell into boiling water and went to be with Jesus 6 days later. Instead we believed God’s promise that, “All things work together for good to those who love God.” [ Romans 8:28 ] This experience gave us a golden key that has opened many sorrowing hearts and poured in hope.
