The seventh of God’s Ten Commandments is. “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” [ Exodus 20:14 ] With few exceptions, all living things are divided into male and female. It’s impossible that all these complicated, complimentary, yet opposite systems that hold the secrets of life could have arrived by accident. Human beings are the acme of creation. We are unique in many ways and particularly because we have a knowledge of right and wrong implanted in our conscience, and also because we can fall in love!
The Lord Jesus said, “From the beginning of creation God made us male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together let not man separate.” [ Mark 10:1-9 ] There are legitimate reasons for divorce, for example if a wife is being so abused that she could die. But adultery is always a sin! The dictionary defines it as, “Violation of the marriage bed. The sexual relation of a married person with one who is not his lawful spouse.”
Because God designed marriage, couples should make a solemn vow in His presence that they will remain faithful to each other, “Till death us do part.” Sadly as time goes by a husband may not constantly cultivate his love for his wife and vice versa. Because of this his eyes will gradually wander to other women. Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman and lusts for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” [ Matthew 5:27-28 ] It is not the glance but the gaze that leads to adultery. Resist the Devil! Kill the snake in the egg! [ James 4:7 ] Watch this space!
