ASTRONOMICAL THOUGHTS

This highly abbreviated article is designed to make people think!  The first sentence in the Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” [ Genesis 1:1 ]  It then describes the creation of the universe in 6 days.  Sadly, through Darwin’s ‘Origin of Species’ many have been led to believe that the universe evolved by chance over millions of years.  This theory was not based on historic observation because no-one was about who could describe what happened!  It was therefore unscientific because it was based on assumptions, not observations.

Genesis describes how God created the sun and moon in order to give us days and years.  Archaeology confirms that for thousands of years the sun’s gravitational pull has given the earth an orbit of approximately 365 days.  To add to this system the moon takes 29½ days to revolve around the earth thus giving us 13 lunar months of approximately 28 days each.  The 4 phases of the moon, produced by the sun’s rays, then divide the months into four 7 day weeks.  To complete the system the earth’s 24 hour rotation time gives us our days and nights.  It’s a scientific principle that no systems consisting of independent parts like this can come together by accident.

Genesis describes the moon as, “The lesser light to rule the night.”  Because the spin of the moon on its axis and its revolutions around the earth have identical periods, we always see the same side of the moon which only reflects 7% of the sun’s rays.  This is a blessing because we now know that the hidden side of the moon is highly reflective so that if it turned round it would not rule the night but destroy it! 

One final astonishing reason why the moon can never turn round is because its centre of mass is 2km nearer the earth than its own geometric centre!  If the Creator had not built in this tiny gap our days and nights would be chaotic.
