YOUR MOST VALUABLE POSSESSION
Hidden within the bodywork of a car is the engine, and hidden within the human body is our soul. It would be foolish to keep the car’s bodywork clean but not to bother about the engine. Similarly it would be foolish to clothe and feed our body but never care about our soul. Just as the engine is the driving force of the car, so the soul is the moral driving force of the body.
Our soul is our most valuable possession and is the only part of us that will never die. Jesus said, “What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” [ Matthew 16:26 ] And He also said, “You shall love the Lord God with all your heart and with all your soul.” [ Mark 12:30 ] The Bible gives us many examples of how to care for our soul. For example if it’s depressed, we should tell it to, “Hope in God.” [ Psalm 42:5 ] Like the Virgin Mary we will say, “My soul magnifies the Lord.” [ Luke 1:46 ] We will sing in harmony with our soul saying, “Praise the Lord, O my soul!” [ Psalm 146 ]
The Apostle begs us, “To abstain from sinful desires which war against the soul.” [ 1 Peter 2:11 ] As a car engine needs an air intake, so our soul needs a prayer intake. We also need to maintain the filter of faith that will shield our precious soul from all the dirty language and the degrading behaviour of those who have thrown their souls to the devil!
By caring for our soul, it will accelerate our ambition to live for the glory of God. We will not fear what others may do because even if they kill our body they cannot harm our soul or steal our treasures laid up in heaven! [ Luke 12:4,5 ]
