THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY
The Archbishop of Canterbury has unwittingly caused many prominent people to remind the British that our common law is founded upon God’s Ten Commandments and that these Biblical laws have served our nation very well for centuries and do not need adjusting. As Queen Victoria said, “It was the Bible that made Great Britain great.” And it was the Bible that turned King Alfred into Alfred the Great, the only British king to be called Great.
When Prince Alfred was born, community life was crumbling just like today through brutality, robbery and rape. Aged 13, Alfred began to hate the coarse, immoral, Saxon lifestyle he was being trained to follow. Feeling polluted, he prayed to God for help and eventually found the joy and peace of forgiveness when he trusted Christ as his Saviour. Aged about 20, tall blond-haired Alfred married a Mercian princess at Gainsborough amidst great public celebration.
Aged 22 Alfred became king and sensibly ordered the building of the first English naval vessels to fight the Danes before they landed. Alfred next reviewed the sad state of England and wisely began to base the laws of the land on the Ten Commandments. Soon assault and immorality were defined as crimes, and appropriate punishments laid down for offenders. Sabbath breaking also became illegal and the whole nation benefited through this day of rest. In addition the king’s palace ceased to be a drunken Saxon court and the Bible was read in it daily. Alfred translated portions of Scripture into English and children, village elders and judges had to learn to read the Scriptures. It was the power of the word of God that brought peace and happiness to Britain and by common consent the people called their beloved king, ‘Alfred the Great’! History teaches us that only the Bible can make Britain great again.
