UNCERTAIN RICHES
“Trust not in uncertain riches” wrote the Apostle Paul to a young preacher. “Command those who are rich not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. “ [ 1 Timothy 6:9-18 ]
Money of course is essential but there are many things it cannot do. It can buy…
Psalm 49 says, “The fool and the senseless person perish, and leave their wealth to others. Their inner thought is that their houses will last forever!” This reminds me of the following poem,
Spend your money while you’re living,
Do not hoard it to be proud,
You can never take it with you,
There’s no pocket in a shroud.
This was not true of Jimmy Wyatt, as these words on his gravestone show.
Interred beneath this churchyard green
Lies stingy Jimmy Wyatt
Who died one morning just at ten
And saved a dinner by it!
A businessman said to me that the following sentence has helped him to find much happiness, “The road to riches without generosity is a lonely path.”
Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” [ Acts 20:35 ] By dying on the cross He became poor so that we might become rich in love, joy and peace and then give our time and money to others. [ 2 Corinthians 8:9 ]
