THE GOLDEN RULE
The Golden Rule for every human being was spoken by Jesus during His famous “Sermon on the Mount” nearly 2000 years ago. Sadly today it is largely forgotten although it is still as up to date as when it was given. It reads like this.
“31Just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.
32But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you! For even sinners love those who love them.
33And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
34And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back.
35But love your enemies, do good and lend, hoping for nothing in return, and your reward will be good!” [ Luke 6:31-35 ]
A shop manageress summed it up perfectly when she said, “I never ask anyone to do anything that I wasn’t prepared to do myself and I never speak to anyone in a way that I wouldn’t like to be spoken to. You get respect by showing respect.”
Over one hundred years ago Charles Kingsley wrote a book that was read by thousands of parents to their children. The title of the book was ‘The Water Babies’ and one of the characters in the book was Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby! This name summed up ‘The Golden Rule’ and although rather lengthy it raised the moral standard of many boys and girls causing them to repent of sin and to thank Jesus for dying on the cross instead of them. Soon His resurrection power entered many hearts giving them the energy and desire to obey the Golden Rule.
