The Passion of the Christ

Like the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, Mel Gibson's film, 'The Passion of The Christ' will be both loved and hated. Hopefully it may cause some to search the Scriptures and read about the Person who left heaven out of love for us, in order to die so that we might be forgiven.

The life, death and resurrection of Jesus all happened within 33 years but during that brief time over 300 prophesies, made over a period of 4000 years were accurately fulfilled. This is just one of many facts that prove without any shadow of doubt that Jesus is God. Here are a few examples of these prophecies with approximate dates.

700BC Isaiah said that a virgin would give birth to a son [ Isaiah 7:14 ]. 400BC Micah announced that this person, whose origins are eternal, would come from Bethlehem [ch5v2]. 500BC Zechariah spoke about 30 pieces of silver being thrown into the house of the Lord for the potter. Centuries later Jesus was betrayed for 30 silver pieces which Judas threw down on the temple floor. The priests then used this money to buy a potter's field. [ Zechariah 11:12 and Matthew 27:3-10 ].

Way back in 1000BC David graphically described in Psalm 22, the horrors of death by crucifixion. This type of torture being completely unknown at that time. He writes about the victim suffering dehydration and dislocation [ Psalm22:14 ]. Penetration of the hands and feet [ v16 ]. Emaciation [ v17 ] and denigration [ v18 ] through the soldiers gambling for His clothes. [ Matthew 27:35 ] It is truly a miracle when history is able to be written down centuries before it happens! The fulfilment of prophecy is a great confirmation that the Bible is the Word of God.

Isaiah looked ahead beyond the death of Christ and wrote, "He was wounded for our transgressions" [ Isaiah 53:5 ]. That's why Good Friday is good news for those who trust in Him.
