Surgeons can set bones, graft skin, transplant organs, cut out tumours and stitch up wounds but they are compelled to wait for God to do the healing. The amazing repair mechanisms in the human body are so brilliant that they leave scientists astounded. When things go wrong, battalions of ‘workmen’ follow the DNA plan in order to re-build the diseased or injured area. If we cut a finger it’s amazing to watch the flesh and skin grow again and assume the right shape with the knuckle lines in the correct position.
Sadly we often take healing for granted and do not thank God for His kindness in providing us with this wonderful gift. Because God alone can heal it follows that when a surgeon operates, he co-operates with God! In view of this it is good to humbly ask for His wisdom and guidance. Happily there are still many medics who do pray.
The word disease means, ‘dis-ease’. There are many who are physically healthy but are still in a state of dis-ease. Frequently they are not at ease with the conscience so they suffer from guilt, fear and depression which can lead to stress related illnesses if not dealt with.
Conscience is God’s voice in each of us. It is a moral compass designed to guide us through life’s twists and turns. We can foolishly stifle it, or wisely obey it. Obedience makes us at ease with conscience and brings peace of heart and mind. But disobedience brings dis-ease and sometimes physical disease.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” [ Psalm 111:10 ]. This reverent awe of God amplifies the voice of conscience and wakes us up to the seriousness of our sin. If we then turn from sin and ask for pardon, Jesus can grant this because He has paid the penalty we deserve.
