Someone said, “It’s hard to be married, but it’s harder not to be!” When I visited the Registrar’s office before my wedding, I commented on the big form to be filled in! “Young man,” he said, “Marriage is a very big thing!” And it certainly is! The choice of a wife or husband for life is the most important decision anyone can make.
The union of male and female to produce offspring, was invented by God who created the two sexes not only among human beings but throughout nature in every kind of fish, insect, bird, animal and plant. In each case the variety and complexity of the organs and processes could only have come about through a creative genius, never by chance!
The marriage of two people to produce children should be motivated by the love of God as described in the Bible. This love is patient, kind, not envious, not proud, not rude, not selfish, not bad tempered. It hates what’s evil and loves what’s right. It has little to do with how beautiful a person is outside but how beautiful they are inside! [ 1 Corinthians chapter 13 ] These moral qualities put holy matrimony on a plain that is infinitely higher than anything else in the kingdom of nature.
Marriage is a picture of the loving relationship between Christ and those He died for. [ Ephesians 5:25 ] God’s plan is for two people to marry who both have the love of Jesus in their hearts; this will lead them into the halls of highest human happiness! Where there is true love, couples will find they can easily commit themselves to each other for life. They will not take the shine off their wedding day by sleeping together first. Instead they will wait patiently and then enjoy everything to the full without a guilty conscience.
