For thousands of years people overlooked the obvious. They watched the lids of cooking pots and kettles being pushed up by the power of steam but it was not until about 300 years ago that they realised that this power could be harnessed. The result was the invention of the steam engine which transformed the world of industry and transport. It didn’t matter whether a person was an atheist or very religious, everyone agreed that these steam engines were the result of intelligent design. No-one in their right mind would suggest that perhaps these engines happened to come together by chance over many years. To talk like this would be to overlook the obvious evidence for design.
If a rather simple steam engine required a fairly intelligent designer how much greater would be the intelligence needed to design and make the human eye! Charles Darwin said, “To suppose that the eye with all its inimitable contrivances could have been formed by natural selection seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree.” The retina which is a light sensitive screen at the back of the eyeball is only the thickness of an onion skin, and has been called, a tissue of superlatives! 120 million rods sensitive to dim light, cover the retina of each eye. There are also three types of light sensitive cones each containing a different pigment. These make colour vision possible in a good light, and there are 6 million in each eye. At the centre of the retina, cones exist at a very high density of 150,000 per square millimetre! These help us to focus on very small objects as when we’re threading a needle. What an outstanding example of design!
The Bible says, “He who formed the eye, shall He not see?” [ Psalm 94 v 9 ]. Who can deny the logic of this or the existence of such super intelligence? Don’t overlook the obvious!
