THUNDERINGS AND LIGHTNINGS

When God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai, there were thunderings and lightnings and a thick cloud of smoke on the mountain! Then a trumpet sounded louder and louder and the whole mountain quaked greatly so that all the people trembled. [ Exodus chapters 19 & 20 ]

The first commandment states, “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.” In Hebrew the word for Thou points to one individual. To translate it You is far too general. We must each recognise that there is only One Infinite, Eternal (Timeless) God, the Creator of the universe and the One we must each stand before in the day of judgement.

The second commandment can be summed up as follows, “Thou shalt not make or bow down and worship any idol.” This would be like a wife being in a room with her husband but kissing and talking to his photograph on the wall! This would be understandable if her husband was dead but God is not dead! The wonderful news is that we can worship and talk to the living and eternal God who is always near us and only a prayer away. We can thank Him for His blessings and ask Him to guide us in every detail of our lives.

The Bible says, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” [ Hebrews 10:31 ] God is love but He is also just. His standard is perfection so that if we break only one commandment we will not be allowed to go through the gates of heaven. The good news is that the Lord Jesus Christ paid the penalty our sins deserved by dying on the cross. However, it is essential that we turn from our sins and ask Him to be our Saviour. Watch this space!
