When it comes to pearls, big is not always beautiful. One giant baroque pearl weighed in at 93 grammes but a fine quality Persian Gulf pearl always commands the highest price. The beauty of a pearl is seen in its translucence and lustre, enhanced by a delicate play of colour on the surface. The value is also increased if it is either a perfect sphere or 'raindrop' shape.
Jesus told a parable about a merchant seeking beautiful pearls. When he found one pearl of great price he went and sold all that he had and bought it. [ Matthew chapter 13 verses 45-46 ]. This is the story about a connoisseur of pearls who was always on the look out for beautiful ones to add to his collection. Eventually on one never to be forgotten day he discovered the pearl of his dreams! The perfect gemstone that he could hardly believe even existed! Suddenly his vast collection seemed pathetic beside this ocean treasure. He knew in his heart that he would never be satisfied until he had it, even though it meant the loss of everything.
This parable is a picture of those who spend their money but never find satisfaction until they discover not a pearl but a person! His name is Jesus and to them He becomes their pearl of great price, the only perfect person who has ever lived. The One who attracts millions by the lustre of His love displayed against the blackness of the cross.
Here's the first verse of a hymn written by someone who had this experience.
I've found the pearl of greatest price,
My heart doth sing for joy;
And sing I must, for Christ is mine!
Christ shall my song employ!
It's worth sacrificing everything to know the Saviour who sacrificed Himself for you. [ See Isaiah chapter 55 verse 2 ].
