Consultant psychiatrist Gary Almy said recently, "I regard the brain as a supernatural organ. It is a material thing but one example of its supernaturality is that it contains a software package called, 'conscience'. I therefore regard mental illness or depression as always both physical and spiritual."
The brain consists of 3-4lbs of the most complex, compact and highly organised material on earth. It contains up to 200 billion neurons - more than the number of stars in the Milky Way! These are accurately connected together and have about ten times more supportive cells! For thousands of years before computers were invented, electronic signals to every part of the body have travelled at speeds up to 100 metres per second. This technological marvel demands a fifth of our blood supply to keep it going. Anyone who says that billions of electrical connections could be correctly joined by accident would blow the fuses of logic in their own brains!
Conscience is invisible and weightless like our thoughts, but just as real. If we choose to break the moral laws in this software package this will cause first guilt, then fear, anxiety and stress which hinder the smooth running of the brain and lead to depression and sometimes even physical damage.
If we allow our brain to think logically it will give us an inner confirmation that it was designed and created by God, "Whose understanding is infinite." [ Psalm 147:5 ] This humble kind of mind finds itself in perfect harmony with these words from God's book. "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." [ Philippians 4:6-7 ]
