CITIZENS OF HEAVEN
The Grecian city of Philippi became part of the Roman Empire in 167BC. Later the inhabitants copied the Roman architecture and fashions so closely that it became more Roman than Rome! But more important than this it became the first city in Europe to have the honour of hearing the Christian gospel from the Apostle Paul and others. Later Paul was unjustly imprisoned for preaching the gospel but he wrote a letter full of joy to the church at Philippi.
Paul knew the Christian Philippians were proud of their Roman citizenship but in his letter he wanted to lift their horizon above politics so he reminded them that their Spiritual citizenship was in Heaven. Although they must obey Caesar in Rome, they must also obey the Lord Jesus in Heaven who will one day return to earth to claim all the kingdoms of the world. As citizens of Heaven they should bring something of Heaven down to earth.
First, Paul had to rebuke two ladies who were always arguing. He told them to adopt the humble mind of Christ and forgive one another, so that they could bring the harmony of heaven down to earth. Secondly, Christians should Rejoice in the Lord always and so bring the joy of heaven down to earth. Thirdly, Christians should bring the gentleness and peace of heaven down to earth by bringing everything to God in prayer and concentrating their thoughts on things that are noble, just, pure, lovely, good and praiseworthy.
Although Paul was in prison he wrote, “I have learned in whatever state I am to be content. I know how to rejoice in poverty or prosperity, I can bring down the contentment of heaven through the strength Christ gives me.” [ Read Philippians chapter 3:20-4:13 ]
