A PIECE OF PAPER
A boy came home just before Christmas and surprised his parents when he shouted out, “I’m a piece of paper!” Later his parents were watching the school play entitled, “Good King Wenceslas” when suddenly the choir sang these words of Good King Wenceslas, “Hither page, come stand by me!” Immediately the penny dropped!
Here’s an old poem about how people can read us!
We are writing a Gospel, a chapter each day,
By the works that we do and the words that we say,
Men read what we are whether faithful or true
Say, what is the Gospel according to You?!
An epistle is a letter but some think that epistle is the wife of an apostle! Paul the apostle wrote many epistles to encourage young churches in Corinth. He had to write some letters of condemnation but others of commendation. To the latter he loved to write, “You are our epistle written in our hearts known and read of all men. Clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is of the heart.” [ 2 Corinthians 3:1-3 ]
Very sadly there are atheists, humanists and so called Christians whose hearts are like tablets of stone. Jesus condemns these people with these solemn words of warning, “Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications (immorality), thefts, false witness, blasphemies (swearing and filthy language).” [ Matthew 15:19 ] These will go into everlasting punishment (hell), but the righteous into everlasting life. [ Matthew 25:46 ]
What a tremendous contrast these words are between hell and heaven! How delightful it is to let the words of Paul melt our hard hearts so that they may be filled with the Spirit of the living God!
