THE QUEEN OF THE SOUTH

200 years ago people often made out their wills before travelling a hundred miles!  3000 years ago the Queen of Sheba, whom Jesus called, “The Queen of the South” travelled over a thousand miles to Jerusalem in order to learn about the great God that Solomon the King of Israel worshipped.  She had heard of the fame of Solomon probably from the Israeli sailors who docked at her Red Sea port.  She also heard them singing the Psalms written by King David, Solomon’s father, and was amazed as they sang about their God who made the moon and stars! [ Psalm 8 ]

2000 years later Jesus warned unbelieving people that, “The Queen of the South will rise up in judgement with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and indeed a greater than Solomon is here!” [ Matthew 12:42 ]  Today things have not changed very much.  Many will drive a hundred miles on a Sunday to sunbathe but not cross the road to a church to allow their soul, their most valuable possession, to bathe in the beneficial light of Jesus who was greater than Solomon.

Although the Queen of Sheba had chests full of treasures and was a very busy person, she knew she must take time out to hear about the God who had apparently made Solomon’s kingdom the greatest in the world.  As she poured out her heart to Him, her doubts dissolved and she cried out, “Behold, the half was not told me.  Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame of which I heard.  Happy are your men and happy are these servants.”

Today nobody has ever regretted making a journey of faith to Christ.  Even Solomon’s kingdom collapsed, but His never will. [ 1 Kings chapter 10 ]
